Apartments alongside Pompano marina to be built at Harbourside at Hidden Harbour

Hundreds of new apartments will rise at the site of a marina off Federal Highway in Pompano Beach. “It’s a nice project,” said Mayor Rex Hardin of Harbourside at Hidden Harbour. Until now, “It’s underutilized property along Federal Highway.”

Harbourside at Hidden Harbour, with a canal view, could become a 9-story mixed-use development with 309 rental apartments. The project also includes 8,000 square feet of shops on the ground floor. Amenities include a rooftop pool, a gym and a daycare. The rent average will be $2,300 per month. Apartments range from 690 square feet for a one-bedroom to 1,217 square feet for three-bedroom units.

It would be built alongside the Aquamarina Hidden Harbour, a marina storage site for dry-stack boat slips, which opened in 2009. A boatyard on Northeast 16th Street will be torn down for the project, as well as two commercial buildings on Federal Highway.

The city is pleased the boatyard, which has had “heavy marine” industrial uses such as fiberglass work and painting, is disappearing. “Residents have complained about that forever,” Hardin said.

“We are excited to be able to transform this vacant and under-utilized land into a world-class waterfront destination,” said the owner, Andrew Sturner, CEO of Aqua Marine Partners, in a prepared statement.

His attorney said some homes will have water views, while others have golf views.

Because it’s across the street from the city’s Air Park, the project still needs permission from the Federal Aviation Administration, and the city’s Planning and Zoning Board, based on the height, according to Scott Reale, Pompano’s senior planner.

The item goes to the Planning and Zoning Board on Wednesday for a recommendation for rezoning approval. It could appear before the city commission for approval as early as September.
